Zhou Deqing (1277–1365), who took the sobriquet Tingzhai, came from Gao'an in Jiangxi and wrote song verse (sanqu) in the Yuan dynasty. He compiled the rhyme book Zhongyuan Yinyun, completed in 1324, which sorts commonly rhymed characters into nineteen rhyme groups, splits the level tone into yin and yang, and distributes the entering tone among the other three tones. A closing section, Rules for Correct Speech in Song Lyrics, sets out the rhyme standards for northern song verse. More than thirty of his short songs survive, along with song suites and fragments, among them On Reading the Life of Prince Yue and Han Shizhong.
