Liu Lanfang

Pingshu storyteller who joined the Anshan Quyi Troupe in 1959; her long cycle The Story of Yue Fei was first broadcast by Anshan People's Radio Station on 1 September 1979 and relayed by 66 stations within a year.

Liu Lanfang was born in 1944 and is a pingshu storyteller. In 1959, at fifteen, she passed the entrance test of the Anshan Quyi Troupe. In 1979 the arts department of Anshan People's Radio Station asked her to record a traditional pingshu cycle, and she chose The Story of Yue Fei. A radio recording could not add small episodes on the spur of the moment as a teahouse performance could, so a script was needed; with a collaborator she rewrote the cycle from the outline handed down to her and a copy of Jingzhong Shuo Yue, performing in the teahouse by day, writing at night and recording at the station on mornings whenever a few episodes were ready. The cycle was first broadcast by Anshan People's Radio Station on 1 September 1979; within a year 66 stations across China were relaying it, and more than a hundred stations went on to broadcast it. She later wrote and broadcast more than thirty further cycles, among them The Generals of the Yang Family and Dream of the Red Chamber.
