Squabbling Ducks
Ducks squabbling in drums and cymbals
On a loess slope, drummers in white headcloths and red sashes stride forward beating large drums on wooden stands, followed by cymbal and gong players. Crowds watch from a terrace below a temple hall among bare trees.
Introduction
A Chinese percussion piece by An Zhishun built on material from Xi'an drum music
Yazi Banzui (Squabbling Ducks) is a Chinese percussion piece by the percussionist An Zhishun. He drew its material from Xi'an drum music, the traditional wind-and-percussion music of Shaanxi, and used a range of Chinese percussion techniques. Contrasts of timbre and volume paint a scene of ducks playfully quarrelling. Available sources date the piece to 1982. An, often called the Drum King, founded the An Zhishun Percussion Troupe.
