MUZI · STAGE · Great Wall Capriccio
Beacon Fires
An ancient battle under beacon fires; the erhu borrows the drive of Beijing opera.
Mural guide
In a bright hall with tall windows, a conductor on a podium raises his hands before an orchestra seated at music stands. Players in long gowns and qipao perform on erhu, pipa, ruan, flutes and sheng, with drums at the back.
Part of · Great Wall Capriccio
The second movement runs from a hurried allegro through an andante and a ringing allegretto to a tragic coda. The erhu draws on the rhythm of the jinghu and Beijing opera music in dialogue with the orchestra.
