Liao Zhongkai, originally named Enxu, came from a family of Guishan, now Huiyang, in Guangdong, and was born in San Francisco in 1877, returning to China with his family at sixteen. He went to study in Japan in 1902, where he and his wife He Xiangning came to know Sun Yat-sen, and he joined the Revolutionary Alliance in 1905. After the 1911 revolution he ran the finances of the Guangdong military government. In 1923 and 1924 he helped Sun reorganise the Kuomintang on the basis of alliance with the Soviet Union and the Communists, became party representative at the Whampoa Military Academy in 1924, and served as the party's head of workers' affairs, governor of Guangdong and finance minister. On 20 August 1925 he was shot dead outside the party headquarters in Canton; his son Liao Chengzhi later also entered politics.
