Provincial governors are the senior officers who held a region and managed its civil and military affairs, such as the regional governors of the late Han, the military governors of the Tang and the governors-general and governors of the Ming and Qing. They had to govern as well as defend. They differ from exemplary magistrates in rank and the size of their area, and from frontier generals in also running civil affairs rather than only guarding the border.
