Liu Bei general, once an officer of Liu Biao, whose attack at Mount Dingjun in 219 killed Xiahou Yuan and won him the rank of General of the Rear
At dusk on a hilltop, a large tent stands open with a table holding a map marked with small stones inside, a saddled horse tethered outside, and fire stands burning; campfires dot the river plain below, and one tiny sentry stands on the slope.

Huang Zhong, courtesy name Hansheng, came from Nanyang. Liu Biao, governor of Jing province, made him a general of the household and posted him with Liu Biao's nephew Liu Pan at You county in Changsha. After Cao Cao took Jing province he served under the Changsha governor Han Xuan, and when Liu Bei secured the southern commanderies he joined him and went into Shu. Fighting Liu Zhang, he was regularly first into the enemy lines, and after Yi province fell he became General Who Attacks the Caitiffs. In 219 at Mount Dingjun in Hanzhong he attacked Xiahou Yuan amid drums that shook the valleys and killed him in a single battle. When Liu Bei became King of Hanzhong he made Huang General of the Rear, equal in rank to Guan Yu, despite Zhuge Liang's worry that Guan would resent it. Huang died the next year and was posthumously named Gang in 260; Chen Shou put him in one chapter with Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Ma Chao and Zhao Yun.
