- Monarch / Emperor
Liu Bian, the eldest son of Emperor Ling and Empress He, took the throne in 189, with Empress Dowager He holding court and his uncle He Jin as regent. In the eighth month He Jin, plotting against the palace eunuchs, was killed by them and the palace fell into turmoil; Dong Zhuo then entered Luoyang and in the ninth month deposed him as Prince of Hongnong and set up Liu Xie, Prince of Chenliu, as Emperor Xian. He had reigned 136 days under the era names Guangxi and Zhaoning. He was forced to drink poison in 190 and was given the posthumous title Prince Huai. Historians differ on whether to count him as a legitimate emperor.
