In a spring palace garden, a pavilion with round windows stands over a pond of goldfish; a peony-painted round fan, a zither and a lacquer box of pearl hairpins lie in the foreground, and one small figure in a long-sleeved gown stands at the far end of a covered walkway.
Empresses and consorts are the wives of a ruler, from the empress to consorts of every rank, together with empress dowagers honoured as a former ruler's consort or the ruler's mother. Their titles were fixed by court ritual, and some took part in court decisions and the succession while a ruler was young or on the throne. Unlike court figures, their status came from marriage or motherhood, not from a post in the palace.
