Court Figures
Attendants, wet nurses and palace officials who served inside the palace
2people
In a palace corridor at evening, red pillars and red lanterns line a polished wooden gallery, with a landscape-painted folding screen at the left, a teapot and cups on a small table before it, and a round-fan stand beside; no person is in view.
Court figures are people who served and held posts inside the palace without being a ruler, consort or royal kin, such as personal attendants, wet nurses and palace officials. Some gained influence over palace affairs, and at times over the court, through closeness to the ruler. They differ from consorts and royal kin in that their status came from a post or service in the palace rather than marriage or blood.
