King Kaolie of Chu, personal name Xiong Wan (Xiong Yuan in the Chu annals), was the son of King Qingxiang. As crown prince he was a hostage in Qin and escaped home through Huang Xie's stratagem when his father fell ill. On taking the throne he made Huang Xie chief minister as Lord Chunshen. When Lord Pingyuan came seeking help against the siege of Handan, Mao Sui's sword-in-hand argument won him over and he sent Lord Chunshen with troops to save Zhao. He also annexed Lu and moved the capital to Shouchun. He is the king persuaded in 'Mao Sui Recommends Himself'.
