Shusun Tong

Confucian of the Qin-Han transition who drew up Gaozu's court ritual and, using Qin musicians, created the music of the Han ancestral temple.

Also known as Lord Jisi

Shusun Tong, from Xue, was summoned to the Qin court as an erudite for his learning. In 205 BCE he went over to Liu Bang, who made him an erudite with the title Lord Jisi. When the new Han court was disorderly, he gathered some thirty Confucians from Lu and his own students to rehearse a court ritual; at the opening of the Changle Palace in 200 BCE the nobles and officials paid homage by his rules, and Gaozu said he now knew the dignity of an emperor. He later served as Grand Master of Ceremonies and tutor to the heir. The Han shu treatise on rites and music records that under Gaozu he created the music of the ancestral temple using former Qin musicians.
