- Monarch / Emperor
Zhao Huan, eldest son of Emperor Huizong of Song and first named Dan, was born in 1100 and made heir apparent in 1115. When Jin armies drove south in the twelfth month of the seventh Xuanhe year (January 1126), his father abdicated in his favour, and the following year was proclaimed the first of the Jingkang era. He put Li Gang in charge of defending Kaifeng, yet during the first siege he also agreed to cede the frontier commanderies of Taiyuan, Zhongshan and Hejian to buy peace. The capital fell at the end of 1126, and early in 1127 the Jin deposed him and his father and carried them north with their consorts and kinsmen, the disaster known as the Jingkang Incident. In captivity he bore the mocking title Marquis Chonghun, later changed to Duke of Tianshui; he died in Jin territory in 1156, though the news reached the Southern Song court only in 1161. He was given the temple name Qinzong.
