Rinchinbal was the second son of Emperor Mingzong, born in 1326 to Empress Babusha. When Emperor Wenzong died at Shangdu in the eighth month of 1332, he left instructions that a son of Mingzong should succeed. The chief minister El Temur passed over the elder son Toghon Temur, then living far away at Jingjiang in Guangxi, and chose Rinchinbal, who was six by Western count and seven by Chinese reckoning. He was enthroned at Dadu in the tenth month, with Wenzong's widow Budashiri presiding over the court. In the eleventh month he fell ill and died after some forty days on the throne, receiving the temple name Ningzong. El Temur tried to delay again, but at Budashiri's insistence Toghon Temur was summoned from Jingjiang and enthroned the next year as Emperor Shundi. No other Yuan emperor reigned for so short a time.
