Xu Huang

Cao Cao general from Hedong who fought at Baima and Guandu and in 219 broke Guan Yu's siege lines around Fancheng

Also known as Zi Gongming

Xu Huang, courtesy name Gongming, came from Yang county in Hedong; first a commandery clerk, he won rank under the general Yang Feng and urged him to escort Emperor Xian back to Luoyang. When Cao Cao attacked Yang Feng in 196 he went over to Cao, fought against Lu Bu and Liu Bei, helped defeat Yan Liang and Wen Chou at Baima and Yanjin, and burned Yuan Shao's supply wagons during the Guandu campaign. In 211 he crossed the Yellow River at Puban by night to secure a bridgehead against Ma Chao and Han Sui. In 219 he broke through Guan Yu's ring of trenches to relieve Fancheng; Cao Cao declared that no general he knew of had driven so deep into an enemy's siege lines, and on seeing his troops still in order compared him with Zhou Yafu of the Han. Under Cao Pi he became General of the Right and Marquis of Yang, and he died in 227.
