Li Chu

Last Tang emperor, set on the throne as a boy by Zhu Wen after his father's murder, forced to abdicate in 907 to Zhu's new Liang dynasty and poisoned the following year

Also known as Tangai Di · Li Zuo · Jiyin Wang

Li Chu, first named Li Zuo, was the ninth son of Emperor Zhaozong, born in 892 and made Prince of Hui in 897. In 904 Zhu Wen, having moved the court to Luoyang, had Zhaozong murdered and used a forged testament to have the boy named heir and enthroned beside the coffin, keeping the Tianyou reign title. In 905 Zhu Wen killed nine of his brothers at the Jiuqu Pool and, at the Baima post station, more than thirty court officials led by Pei Shu, whose bodies were thrown into the Yellow River. In the spring of 907 Li Chu was made to abdicate in favour of Zhu's new Liang dynasty, ending a Tang house that had ruled since 618. Demoted to Prince of Jiyin and moved to Caozhou, he was poisoned there early in 908. The Liang named him Emperor Ai; the Later Tang emperor Mingzong renamed him Emperor Zhaoxuan, and he was buried at Wenling.
