Zhu Youzhen

Last emperor of the Later Liang, a son of Zhu Wen who overthrew his brother Zhu Yougui in 913 and fought Li Cunxu for a decade before ordering his own death in 923

Also known as Zhu Huang · Zhu Zhen · Houliang Modi · Jun Wang

Zhu Youzhen, son of the Later Liang founder Zhu Wen by Empress Zhang, was born in 888, made Prince of Jun in 907 and later put in charge of the eastern capital. After his brother Zhu Yougui murdered their father and seized the throne in 912, Zhu Youzhen plotted the next year with Yang Shihou, military governor of Weibo, and the imperial son-in-law Yuan Xiangxian; Zhu Yougui killed himself, and Youzhen took the throne at Kaifeng, renaming himself first Huang and then Zhen. In 915 the Weibo army mutinied and went over to Li Cunxu, Prince of Jin, and Liang lost its territory north of the Yellow River, leaving the two sides locked along the river for years. In 923 Li Cunxu proclaimed the Later Tang and sent Li Siyuan to seize Yunzhou and then march on Kaifeng. Seeing no way out, Zhu Youzhen ordered his officer Huangfu Lin to kill him, and the Later Liang ended seventeen years after its founding.
