Emperor Zhangzong of Jin, Wanyan Jing, a grandson of Shizong, was born in 1168 and took the throne in 1189 as the sixth Jin emperor, with the era names Mingchang, Cheng'an and Taihe. His early reign is known as the good order of Mingchang. He revised laws and rites, issued the Taihe code and built border trenches and walls against the northern peoples, and his calligraphy resembled the slender gold style of Emperor Huizong of Song. As the Mongols rose, Jin military strength declined. In 1208 he concluded the Jiading peace with the Southern Song, and he died that year.
