Ying Kaoshu
Zheng border warden famed for filial piety who reconciled Duke Zhuang with his mother and died attacking Xu in 712 BCE.
At dawn in a palace courtyard, a large drum hangs in a small roofed frame beside a red pillar, with a bound bundle of scrolls on a low stand in front; a stone balustrade leads toward a large hall in the mist, and a row of tiny people stands far away.
Also known as Border Warden of Yinggu
Ying Kaoshu was the border warden of Yinggu in Zheng. After Duke Zhuang lodged his mother Wu Jiang at Chengying and swore never to see her again, he soon regretted the vow. Ying Kaoshu, presenting gifts at court, set aside the meat from his meal for his own mother, drawing the duke into confessing his remorse, and proposed digging down to a spring so mother and son could meet in a tunnel. The Zuo zhuan praises his pure filial piety. In 712 BCE, during the attack on Xu, he was first onto the wall with the duke's banner when Gongsun Zidu, nursing a grudge, shot him dead from below.
