Guan Ying of Suiyang began life as a silk dealer. He joined Liu Bang's rising against Qin and became commander of the Han cavalry, pursuing Xiang Yu to Dongcheng after the battle of Gaixia, and was made Marquis of Yingyin. After Empress Lü died he was sent against Qi but instead allied with its king, helping Zhou Bo and Chen Ping destroy the Lü clan and enthrone Emperor Wen. He served as grand commandant and then succeeded Zhou Bo as chancellor, dying a year later. Su Shi's Treatise on Jia Yi names him, with Zhou Bo of Jiang, among the old ministers who blocked Jia Yi.
