In the courtyard of a district government hall, a line of petitioners waits before a raised bench with a long table and document boxes; a blue umbrella stands beside it, a large drum stands at the gate where a few people wait, and a lake with sailboats lies beyond.

Wang Kai, courtesy name Junfu, of Tan county in Donghai, was a son of the Wei classicist Wang Su and younger brother of Empress Wenming, wife of Sima Zhao, which made him maternal uncle of Emperor Wu of Jin. As an imperial in-law he held posts such as General of the Rear and was enfeoffed Duke of Shandu; his posthumous name was Chou, "the Ugly". A New Account of the Tales of the World records his contest of extravagance with Shi Chong, in which Emperor Wu backed him with a coral tree that Shi Chong smashed.
