Cao Jingzong
Liang general styled Zizhen from Xinye, who backed Xiao Yan's founding of the Liang and beat the Northern Wei at Zhongli, remembered for a poem on the rhymes jing and bing.
At dusk on a hilltop, a large tent stands open with a table holding a map marked with small stones inside, a saddled horse tethered outside, and fire stands burning; campfires dot the river plain below, and one tiny sentry stands on the slope.
Also known as Zizhen · Duke of Jingling
Cao Jingzong, courtesy name Zizhen, came from Xinye and was a Liang general, son of the Liu Song general Cao Xinzhi. He backed Xiao Yan's accession, was made Marquis and then Duke of Jingling, and rose to chamberlain and commander of the guards. In 506 he and Wei Rui defeated the Northern Wei generals Yuan Ying and Yang Dayan at Zhongli. At a banquet given by Emperor Wu he drew the last, difficult rhymes jing and bing and improvised a poem comparing himself to Huo Qubing. He died on the way to his post at Jiangzhou in 508 and was named Zhuang.
