Cai Que, courtesy name Chizheng, came from Jinjiang in Quanzhou and was a Northern Song minister. He began as a military judge of Binzhou and was recommended to the court by Wang Anshi; in 1082 he became Right Vice-Director of State Affairs and Vice-Director of the Secretariat, and after Zhezong's accession Left Vice-Director with the Chancellery. In the Yuanyou years he was sent out to Chenzhou and Anzhou, where he wrote ten quatrains at the Chegai Pavilion; his rival Wu Chuhou charged that the poems mocked the court, producing the Chegai Pavilion poem case, and Cai was banished to Xinzhou and died there.
