During the Tianbao era, Yang Yuhuan entered Xuanzong's court and became its favored consort, while Huaqing served repeatedly as a setting for imperial journeys and banquets. Court life, music, and mountain gardens together gave the high Tang its cultural signature.

Yang Guifei (719–756), personal name Yang Yuhuan, was a consort of Emperor Xuanzong. During the An Lushan Rebellion she fled west from Chang'an with the emperor and died under coercion in the mutiny at Mawei. Historical accounts place her death within the linked crises of Tong Pass, the court's evacuation, and military revolt; later literature and art gave her many additional cultural afterlives.
