Liu Changyi
Mid-Tang general from Yangqu in Taiyuan who became Military Governor of Chen-Xu, and the model for Lord Liu in the tale of Nie Yinniang.
A walled hilltop city with a tall brick gate tower stands above a pine-covered cliff, its wall running along the ridge, while a long wooden bridge crosses a wide river below and plains, islets and layered mountains stretch into the distance, with no person in view.
Also known as Zi Guanghou · Duke of Pengcheng Commandery
Liu Changyi, courtesy name Guanghou, was from Yangqu in Taiyuan with ancestral roots in Pengcheng. Known for his strategic skill, he served on the staff of Qu Huan at Chen-Xu, became Prefect of Chen, and rose to Military Governor of Chen-Xu, enfeoffed Duke of Pengcheng; he died in 813. Pei Xing's late Tang collection Chuanqi uses him as the model for the commander whom the Weibo governor sends the assassin Nie Yinniang to kill, only for her to change sides out of admiration. That plot is fiction, not history.
