Kong Duanyou

Forty-eighth-generation descendant of Confucius and Duke Yansheng who asked for the new Dasheng music to be granted to the Qufu temple and founded the southern Kong line at Quzhou.

Also known as Zi Zijiao

Kong Duanyou, styled Zijiao, was the forty-eighth-generation descendant of Confucius and eldest son of Kong Ruomeng; he inherited the title Duke Yansheng in 1104. After Emperor Huizong cast the Dasheng bells and created the new Dasheng music, Kong petitioned for the instruments to be granted to the Confucian temple at Qufu; they arrived in 1116, the first such imperial gift of instruments to the temple. In 1128 he followed Emperor Gaozong south, escorting the carved wooden images of Confucius and his wife, and was settled at Quzhou, where he built a family temple; the Kong lineage thus split into southern and northern branches. He died in 1132 and was succeeded by his nephew Kong Jie.
