Sun Quan, courtesy name Zhongmou, second son of Sun Jian, came from Fuchun in Wu commandery. When his brother Sun Ce was assassinated in 200, he inherited his command in the lower Yangzi, relying on Zhang Zhao and Zhou Yu. When Cao Cao came south in 208, he followed Zhou Yu and Lu Su in allying with Liu Bei to defeat him at Red Cliff, and in 219 he sent Lu Meng to seize Jing province, capturing and killing Guan Yu. After Lu Xun crushed Liu Bei at Yiling in 222, Sun Quan declared himself emperor at Wuchang in 229 and soon moved to Jianye. He sent Wei Wen and Zhuge Zhi by sea to find Yizhou, but later mishandled the feud between his heir Sun He and Sun Ba, Prince of Lu, and Lu Xun, rebuked by him, died in distress. He died in 252 and was styled Emperor Da. Pei Songzhi's commentary quotes Cao Cao, viewing his army, as saying a son should be like Sun Zhongmou.
