Putuo tradition holds that the Japanese monk Huie left a Guanyin image at Putuo after rough seas prevented its onward passage during his return voyage.

From 1558 to 1561, Qi Jiguang's army campaigned along the Zhejiang coast and won nine victories around Taizhou.
