Sheshan Basilica

Completed in 1935, the granite Gothic basilica with pointed vaults rises 38 metres and is a major Catholic pilgrimage centre in the Far East.

Halfway up Sheshan, this chapel first built in the Tongzhi era is the hill's oldest, with fourteen bronze Stations of the Cross set in pavilions along the winding stone path.

Founded by French missionaries in 1900 as one of China's first modern observatories, it preserves a 40-centimetre double refractor telescope and an astronomy museum.

Dating from the Taiping Xingguo era of the Northern Song, this slender seven-storey octagonal pagoda of brick and timber rises above bamboo-covered hills.

In 1900–1901, Sheshan Observatory and its 40-centimeter double refractor were established in Shanghai as an early large optical-astronomy facility in China.
