This canon gathers treasures of territory, transport and public works: maps of rivers, mountains and roads, chariot fittings and bronze chariots, boat models, and relics of bridges and waterworks. They record how each age measured, linked and governed a vast land.
On a clifftop above a sea of clouds, a map of mountains and rivers lies unrolled beside a model of a canopied horse-drawn chariot and a model two-masted junk, while sails dot the river beyond, where a sluice gate and a many-arched stone bridge span the water. Map, chariot, ship and bridge evoke how the land was measured, linked and governed.
Walls guarding the frontier, canals carrying grain: the large-scale works through which successive dynasties built spaces for defense, transport and dwelling.
