This canon gathers treasures of war and strategy: bronze ge halberds and famous swords, armour and crossbows, tiger tallies and credentials for moving troops, bamboo-slip military treatises and board games. They witness the edge of battle and the wisdom of winning without fighting.
Beneath a city wall and watchtower with banners flying, a weapon rack holds a long-handled glaive, a sword and a crossbow, beside a suit of armour with its helmet, a great war drum on a wooden stand, and a table with a game board and a bronze tiger. Arms, armour and the game board evoke both the edge of battle and the art of strategy.
Great form has no shape, and war admits deception: the stratagems of classical military thought and the contests of strategy among rival states.
