Regional story
A place shaped through time
Baisha Li Autonomous County lies in the mountains of west-central Hainan, between Qiongzhong, Ledong, Changjiang and Danzhou. In 1689 the Qing set up a garrison called Bosha here, a name that gradually became Baisha, and a county was formally created in 1935. The Nandu River, Hainan's longest, rises in the southern mountains and flows north through the hills before reaching the sea at Haikou. Li people form the majority, and mountain villages keep Li brocade, bamboo crafts and traditional songs alive. Upland tea gardens meet primeval forest in the mist, giving the county some of the cleanest air on the island.
