Changjiang Li Autonomous County lies in western Hainan, where the lower Changhua River crosses its land to the Beibu Gulf. In 607 the Sui created the counties of Changhua and Ji'an here; the name Changhua lasted more than a thousand years until it became Changjiang in 1914. The rainforest of Bawangling is the last home of the Hainan gibbon and one of the best-preserved old-growth forests on the island. Xinchong Cave has yielded traces of early humans and is a protected national heritage site, pushing local history back into prehistory. Qizi Bay is named for the black and white pebbles scattered across its beach, and mangoes and pineapples are the county's specialities.
