Regional story

A place shaped through time

Shuanghe lies in the Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture and takes its name, Two Rivers, from the Bortala and Jinghe rivers that cross its territory. It borders Kazakhstan to the northwest and covers more than 2,800 square kilometres, with farmland spread across the river plains. The city reaches west to the Tasierhai reservoir, and the Bole–Jinghe highway runs east to west through its centre. Its rivers descend from the northern ranges of the Tianshan into the Bortala valley, watering the oasis on the valley floor. The two rivers in its name are the most direct mark of this frontier town's geography.
