Wuzhishan is the hill town of south-central Hainan, its centre sitting higher than any other town on the island. Its former name, Tongza, comes from the Li language and means a fertile valley; in 2001 it was renamed for Wuzhi Mountain, whose five finger-like peaks form the highest summit of Hainan. The Wanquan River, the island's largest, rises within its borders, while the Nansheng River crosses the town from east to west. Most residents are Li people, and mountain villages keep traditions of brocade weaving, stilt houses and upland rice. A cool, rainy tropical highland climate surrounds the town with the core forests of the Hainan rainforest.
