Regional story

A place shaped through time

Ledong Li Autonomous County spans southwestern Hainan, from the mountains southwest of Wuzhi Mountain down to the South China Sea. In 1614 the Ming built the Le'an fort near Baoyou, naming it after the Le'an River, the old name of the Changhua River, and the area belonged to Yazhou from the Song onwards. Le'an County was founded in 1935 as one of the three counties of the Li uplands alongside Baoting and Baisha, and was later renamed Ledong. Jianfengling preserves extensive tropical seasonal rainforest and is among the most biodiverse places in China. On the coast, Yinggehai is known for sun-dried sea salt, and old market towns such as Huangliu and Foluo dot the plain.
