The east wind thaws; the spring ox takes the field

Introduction

First of the solar terms: the east wind thaws the ice and the farming year begins

The Beginning of Spring is the first of the twenty-four solar terms. It falls when the sun reaches 315° of ecliptic longitude, around 3–5 February, and was taken as the start of spring. Its three pentads are the east wind thawing the ice, hibernating insects beginning to stir, and fish rising with ice on their backs. Winter wheat begins to green and farmers prepare for spring ploughing; the custom of whipping the spring ox marks the opening of the farming year.
