Bamboo beaters on the dulcimer, the story shared among the singers

Introduction

Seated performers sing story ballads to their own yangqin and fiddles

Qinshu is a quyi form of sung storytelling led by the yangqin hammered dulcimer: performers usually sit together and play yangqin, zhuiqin fiddle, sihu and other instruments themselves, singing more than speaking, in medium and long stories. The main forms are Shandong qinshu (V-21), Xuzhou qinshu (V-73), Sichuan yangqin (V-75), Enshi yangqin (V-74), the Yicheng and Quwo qinshu of Shanxi (V-99, V-100), and Caijiawa wuyin dagu (V-128), which shares its wuyin dagu ancestry with Beijing qinshu. Shandong qinshu grew out of 'zhuangjia shua' ditty singing around Heze in southwest Shandong and took up the yangqin by the mid-Qing; it has southern, northern and eastern schools. The costumed staging of its eastern school later grew into Lü opera.
