Food on the street

Introduction

Snacks sold in portions on streets and at markets.

Street snacks are snacks sold on the street and at night markets. At the Zhouqiao night market of the Song capital Dongjing there were braised meat, eel buns and lychee paste, called miscellaneous nibbles and sold until the third watch, and in the Southern Song capital the streets of Lin'an traded day and night, with stalls selling pastries and meat congee at dawn. The kinds and tastes of street snacks differ from place to place. Tea-house dim sum belongs to Dim Sum, rice cakes to Rice Snacks, and flatbreads eaten as the staple of a meal to Flatbreads.
